Beyond Cultural Competence: Aging and Diversity in the 21st Century - Part I
8:00 AM - 9:30 AM

With our country becoming more and more diverse, the field of aging is feeling the pressure to become diverse and inclusive. At the same time, some in the field claim that there is no need to change. This session will discuss the barriers to inclusion and identify ways to address them. We will discuss creative mechanisms and programs that have developed diverse leadership in aging.

Participants will learn to:

  1. Identify barriers to full inclusion and cultural competence in the field of aging.
  2. Identify programs that have worked for marginalized older adults and upcoming diversity-related trends.

Beyond Cultural Competence: Aging and Diversity in the 21st Century - Part II
10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

This is a continuation of the previous session. The focus of this session will be on action. Attendees will take brief assessments on their cultural competency in the field of aging. They will participate in groupings where they will role play situations in which there are barriers to inclusion and work to build coalitions to overcome those barriers.

Participants will learn to:

  1. Identify barriers to full inclusion and discover mechanisms to help solve them.
  2. Create strategies to build coalitions and work with allies to advance inclusion in the field of aging to bring about positive change for diverse populations of elders who have been under-served, overlooked or altogether left out in the current universe of aging services.
