Mind Alert Speakers Bureau

Program Description & Application Process

The American Society on Aging MindAlert Advisory Board opens a call for proposals from organizations interested in hosting a one-day training on programs and techniques that stimulate and develop MindAlert training for older adults.

The ASA MindAlert program seeks to disseminate research and promote innovative practices that address the steps that older adults can take to maintain and enhance their cognitive and mental functions in their later years. This includes reaching out to those with early-stage cognitive impairments who can benefit from an array of stimulating programs. The MetLife Foundation MindAlert Speakers Bureau purpose is to train professionals around the country to implement cognitive stimulating programs in local settings. Faculty for the Speakers Bureau have received the MetLife Foundation MindAlert Award and are recognized as an innovative community-based program translating research related to enhancing cognitive function in later life into practical mental/cognitive health promotion activities.

Five (5) applicants within the United States will be awarded $1200 to publicize and host a training program to take place in 2010. Sites may choose programs and topics from a menu of sessions offered by the MindAlert Speakers Bureau faculty.  Click here to view the sessions offered by the Speakers Bureau faculty.

Briefly, the host site will:

  1. Develop a promotional plan that will:

    1. Attract at least 25 professionals interested in furthering MindAlert training among local older community members to attend the session;
    2. Recruit 15-25 older adults to participate in the session's demonstration program, depending on the presentation selected by the Host Site.

  2. Locate and secure:

    1. An accessible facility to accommodate 50 participants;
    2. Catering services to accommodate morning refreshments for all participants and lunch for professionals participating in the program;
    3. Audio visual equipment as requested by the faculty;
    4. Copies of all handouts provided by the faculty.

  3. Coordinate:

    1. Presentation content with the chosen faculty member to tailor materials to your community;
    2. Registrations of all participants;
    3. Evaluation distribution, collection and submission to ASA.

A stipend of $1200 is provided to host sites to defray the expenses of promoting and producing the day-long program. ASA will cover the speaker's costs such as transportation, lodging and honorarium.

Submission Requirements

Interested sites may submit an application to the MindAlert Advisory Board no later thanApril 12, 2010. Sites will be selected and notified late in April, 2010.

Host Site Scope of Work

PURPOSE

To facilitate the implementation of MindAlert programs in settings such as senior centers, adult learning programs in community colleges, and park and recreation programs, among other venues.

DUTIES

  1. Work with ASA to plan and conduct one full-day train-the-trainers program to take place April 30-September 30, 2010. Choose one of the MindAlert Award-Winning Trainers from a menu of innovative and effective programs for older adult cognitive vitality (See list of trainers and program descriptions). Offer the program for $10 to all professional participants. You may choose to refund the $10 on the day of the program. The deposit is to ensure participants are committed to attend.
  2. Sponsor a full-day program which may have two components:

    1. A morning session with an expert from the MindAlert Speakers Bureau conducting a half-day workshop for older adults using the chosen model for MindAlert training programs. Professionals participating in the train-the-trainers program would observe the workshop as a hands-on training experience.
    2. An afternoon follow-up workshop in a train-the-trainers seminar format. This seminar would review the key components of the MindAlert training program presented in the morning, teach how it would be implemented in different sorts of settings, discuss resource requirements and answer questions.
    3. A lunch program for professionals attending the afternoon train-the-trainers seminar.

      OR

    4. A full-day program of examples and demonstrations depending on the program selected.
  3. Recruit 15-25 older participants for the morning demonstration program and at least 25 professionals from outside your organization to participate in the full-day seminar program.
  4. Distribute and collect evaluation forms recording reactions from professionals and complete a host agency evaluation. Return all evaluations to ASA.

CRITERIA

  • Membership:
    The Host Site must have an ASA organizational membership or a staff member must hold a current individual membership. This program is one of the many benefits of ASA membership.
  • Organization:
    Experience of agency in organizing training programs, collaborating with other community programs and addressing cognitive fitness issues in the community.
  • Facility:
    Ability to accommodate 50 participants in an accessible facility and provide refreshments and lunches.
  • Outreach:
    Ability to recruit participants, to involve the local community in outreach planning.
  • Follow-up:
    Demonstrated commitment to follow through on lessons learned from the program through future local programs, outreach to older adults with new programs or adapting local programs. Communicate at least one or more time with participants to show coordinated efforts.
  • Historically serve diverse populations including by ethnicity, culture, disability and/or geography (rural, suburban urban).
